Trend Tuesday | Culottes

It took me a bit to warm up to this trend but now I can’t get enough! Every time I see someone sporting a pair on the street, they always look so fashion-forward and chic. And they’re so comfy – I love how popular the loose, cropped trouser has become. Realizing that this is a pretty out-there trend, I’ve come up with some best practices when snagging and styling.

Shop My Outfit: WHITE KNOT SHIRT  (Zara) | CHAMBRAY CULOTTES (Target) (Similar Here) | NUDE LACEUP HEELS (Mango) | CLUTCH (MILLY)

1 – I think the style of culottes that are the most flattering are the flowy kind. Find some that sort of imitate a full swingy skirt.

SHOP: SNAKESKIN CULOTTES (Anthropologie) | BLACK CULOTTES (Express) | CULOTTE JUMPSUIT(Asos) | WHITE CULOTTES (Ann Taylor) | MUSTARD CULOTTES (Lulus) | PINK CULOTTES (Zara)

2 – Consider any pleats or other folds on the pant carefully. Those can easily draw attention to the wrong areas.

3 – For styling, I think my best tip is keep the top light. Simple is best but, like with the top I chose, some details can be bold but still light and airy. I also love to wear my slightly-cropped short sleeve white button-up with these pants. Crop tops are great because they draw attention to a small waist – just no midriff so make sure there is overlap (for work, anyway).

4 – I also love plain white tees/ graphic tees tucked into culottes. The best outfits featuring culottes I see time and time again are extremely simple and clean. If the top isn’t a cropped style, it’s best to tuck in. Otherwise you’ll end up looking pretty blob-like; you gotta create some curves!

5 – For shoes, heels are a good choice because culottes chop your legs up at a weird spot. I think lace-up and strappy styles are the best to go with because they can really be showcased with all that skin revealed down there. I think sneakers and slide-on sandals are also ok, just maybe not for any petite peeps.

6 – A monochrome look is a really smart choice if you are able to do it. This will help elongate your body even further and combat the weird length of the pants.

What do you think of culottes? Let me know in the comments below!
